Petticoat Rules: 25th Anniversary Revival
If you haven't yet heard of Petticoat Rules, you are missing out on some wonderful Jackson Hole heritage.
Petticoat Rules is a musical about Jackson Hole’s first all-female town council – five hard working, community-centered, and prudent women who steadfastly worked to clean up Jackson and make it a better place from 1920 to 1923. Broadly, the term “petticoat rule” usually refers to women with power or influence in politics or leadership, and often has a negative connotation. This beloved performance, however, pokes fun at the phrase, and the title helps to set a hilarious and meaningful tone to the musical narrative.
First performed in 2000 on the stage of the Pink Garter Theatre (at the time, called the Mainstage Theater), Petticoat Rules is the creative fruit of then Jackson Hole local and composer Pam Drews Phillips and Broadway actress, Theatre World Award-winner and playwright (best known for her hit musical Cowgirls) Mary Murfitt. Although the two artists worked together to create this musical from different parts of the country, the result had an explosive, binding, and momentous effect.
The musical has always been directed, produced, and performed by local community members, and this year’s 25th Anniversary Revival is no exception. Directed by Jackson’s very own Andrew Munz, audiences will enjoy brand new sets, the artistry of 16 local actors, and the return of and live musical accompaniment by both Pam Drews Phillips and Mary Murfitt.
“Petticoat Rules stands as proof that small towns can tell big stories. Even more so, that art, when it’s grown from local soil, has the power to restore forgotten stories and inspire others to create new ones.” – Andrew Munz, Director, Actor, and Comedian

MORE ABOUT PETTICOAT RULES:
THE PINK GARTER THEATRE
Although it’s gone by several names over the years, the Pink Garter Theatre has been a performing arts venue in Jackson Hole since 1969. In 2023, Tumbleweed Creative Arts (led by writer, performer, and director Andrew Munz) became the steward of this historical space, with the goal to create a community-driven home for heritage and local arts. Today, the Pink Garter Theatre is Jackson Hole’s only alcohol-free venue, so that the focus can be on creation and finding connection.
