Between unsure markets, the surge in long-term rentals being converted to short term vacation rentals, inflation, and skyrocketing prices for land and materials, it can be a struggle for families to find affordable, decent, and secure places to call home. Yet everyone deserves a safe and stable place to live. This is the mission of Habitat for Humanity, who has chapters across the Equality State (as well as the world!) helping families discover better futures through their tried and true Homeownership Program.

“Habitat homes are affordable because Habitat does not make a profit, the homes are sold with a no-interest loan, and the homes are built by volunteers. It's a program that works!”

If you struggle to find a safe and decent home in your area that you can truly afford, there’s a good chance you are eligible for the Habitat for Humanity Homeownership Program! Qualified applicants have a demonstrated need for housing. This might include unaffordable rent prices in their community, or that available housing options are substandard or inadequate. Applicants might also be chosen based on their annual income, or other factors such as credit, background, and residency.

“Through our homeownership program, individuals and families who might not otherwise qualify for a traditional mortgage can still achieve their dream of owning a home. Habitat homes are not free - each family who partners with us is making a personal and financial investment in their future.”

Accepted applicants for the Homeownership Program are expected to give back to Habitat for Humanity through hundreds of hours of “sweat equity.” Depending on the chapter, this might be done by joining volunteers to build your own home, helping to build homes for others, or volunteering through the ReStore or other opportunities. The Program also includes financial and homeownership classes for future Habitat Homeowners, ensuring that each applicant has the tools and understanding they need to remain a responsible homeowner long into the future.

“The Habitat program is a hand up, not a handout.”
