"Granite": When Community Stories Take Root at Home

At Hughes Charitable Foundation, we believe in going and doing likewise: showing up for our neighbors, investing in local solutions, and helping communities support themselves. That’s why we’re excited to celebrate Granite, a new literary and arts journal from Tumbleweed Editions and Tumbleweed Creative Arts, launching this week in Jackson.

Granite is built on a simple but powerful idea: the voices of this place matter, and they deserve a home right here. Created by and for people connected to Teton County, Granite showcases original poetry, prose, photography, and visual art rooted in the lived experiences of our community. Its inaugural issue, Pressure, explores the forces – personal, environmental, cultural – that shape us, much like the granite beneath our feet that holds steady under strain.

Edited by award-winning author Téa Obreht, Granite offers emerging and established Wyoming creatives a platform to be seen, heard, and valued without having to leave the state. In a rural place where artistic representation can be hard to come by, Granite is an act of care, neighbors uplifting neighbors, stories strengthening community ties, and local talent investing back into the place that formed it.

The journal’s release was celebrated on Tuesday, January 13, at the historic Pink Garter Theatre, the home for Tumbleweed Creative Arts, with readings from contributors and early access to the publication ahead of its official release on January 16.

Granite reminds us that meaningful change doesn’t always arrive with fanfare. Sometimes it looks like listening closely, creating space, and choosing to support what’s growing right in front of us. This is community taking action. This is neighbors loving neighbors. This is one example of what it looks like to go and do good… together.

Get Involved

Tumbleweed Creative Arts and Granite exists because neighbors showed up for neighbors: artists, volunteers, and supporters who believe local creativity matters. You can be part of this story too: volunteer at events, help behind the scenes, or contribute your own thoughts and writing to future issues of Granite. Every act of support ensures Wyoming voices are seen, heard, and celebrated. Go and do good… help our community’s creative spirit grow.

Next for Tumbleweed Creative Arts

The creative energy at the Pink Garter Theatre doesn’t stop with Granite. Coming up next, Tumbleweed Creative Arts will bring back Burlesque: La Cachette in February,  a bold, joyful celebration of performance, artistry, and self-expression created by and for our community. Keep an eye out for dates, tickets, and ways to support this uniquely local production. When we show up for our artists, we help creativity and community thrive.
